Time management

"You can come if you have time, but you must if you have not!"

Time managementMost of us feel we need more time. A day, however, consists of only 24 hours, not a minute more. We need to economize on what we have to reach the goals we have wanted for a long time and have also had all the means, too, only time was missing.

In order to do so, we have to examine why we run out of time, and learn to use methods to be assigned optimally to our activities. It is called time management.

There are four main reasons why people cannot utilize their time effectively:

  • First of all, they are not aware of their tasks and goals so they get lost in the labyrinth of unimportant activities and cannot have achievements. This happens after a hard day’s work when someone feels not having stopped for a minute and achieved no real results all day.
  • Secondly, we do not see time for achieving our goals. In this case there is no problem with intentions, and we keep calming ourselves by saying ‘I will have some time for it later.’
  • Thirdly, we do not schedule the targeted goal or task we would even have time for. This time we do not spend time on a half-day sleighing together until snow melts.
  • If all this is right, there is still the fourth reason to prevent us from reaching our goals. Due to personal and phone interruptions, long, unimportant meetings, loads of letters, documents, colleagues with problems, or the lack of delegating we simply do not execute our tasks written in our calendars.

Therefore in order to utilize our time, we need to examine and break down our goals into smaller units, so that we can prioritize our tasks and decide whether we have time to execute the really important ones. If we do not have time, time-robbers and bad habits need to be identified and managed. If we do, tasks need to be scheduled and not avoided. We however need tricks like meeting management, overcoming procrastination, managing interruptions, delegating or team time management.

In order to utilize your time you need to:

  • Review and divide your aims and prioritize your tasks in a system.
  • Then decide if you really have time to implement the important ones. If not, you need to identify and manage your time robbers or bad habits.
  • If you have time, you need to plan and schedule the tasks.
  • Finally you need to overcome obstacles. Tools for meeting management, overcoming procrastination, delegating and team time management may help you.
